7 Pictures Remaining is a meditation on the technology of photographic capture and its relationship to both loss and discovery.
Deep in the camera vault of the California Museum of Photography, several years ago, Gould opened the back of one camera among thousands on the shelves. She snapped it shut, but too late for the unexpected film within. This accidental discovery—and obliteration—of abandoned film in one camera’s chamber led to a quest to (more carefully) open every camera in the collection, seeking film that might contain exposures awaiting eventual development. 7 Pictures Remaining reveals many of the photographs found, interspersed with musings on photography’s impulses, on finite film lengths, on ephemerality, and on the tropes of vernacular photography.
